Can You Add Seakeeper to an Existing Yacht? A Malaysia Refit Planning Guide
A Seakeeper refit starts with the yacht, not just the gyro model. The manufacturer offers refit pathways for existing boats, but the installation needs to be assessed against the vessel’s layout and systems. This guide explains what to prepare for an initial discussion in Malaysia.
What the assessment looks at
Seakeeper’s published refit checklist considers installation space, added weight, supporting structure, electrical capacity and plumbing. It also calls for model-specific maintenance clearances and vessel characteristics for sizing or performance assessment. These are connected questions: a unit that fits physically still needs an appropriate installation.
Prepare the vessel information
- Make, model, build year, dimensions and hull type.
- Available displacement information, clearly identified as dry or full-load figures.
- Plans and photographs of possible installation areas.
- Generator, battery and charging-system details.
- Cooling-system access and available machinery-space layout.
- Existing modifications, major equipment and intended use.
If a figure is unknown, say so. An estimated weight or brochure dimension should be identified as such rather than treated as a measured value. Your assessor can explain what needs confirmation for the proposed model.
Protect access as well as space
Think about how the unit reaches the installation area and how technicians will reach it afterwards. Photographs should show surrounding machinery, hatches and access routes, not just an empty floor area. A refit may also involve moving other equipment or creating a service opening; ask for those items to be included in the scope.
Compare a complete installation scope
Request a quotation that separates the unit from the work required to install and commission it. Discuss any structural assessment, foundations, electrical upgrades, cooling connections, access changes and yard attendance. Ask who is responsible for each part and which assumptions remain subject to inspection.
A manufacturer refit example for another boat is useful background, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed installation price or completion time for your yacht. Schedule the work around the actual assessment, equipment availability and yard arrangements.
