LIYR Registration & Compliance

What is LIYR?

LIYR is the Langkawi International Yacht Registry. Eligible yachts may register under the Malaysian flag with Langkawi as the port of registry.

What is the difference between private and commercial yacht registration?

Private registration is generally intended for the owner’s personal recreational use. A yacht used for paid charter, carrying passengers for hire or other paid recreational operations may require a commercial pathway and additional compliance.

Can a privately registered yacht be used for paid charter?

Private registration does not automatically permit commercial charter. The registration, insurance, survey, safety equipment, manning and certification position should be reviewed before accepting paid bookings.

How many passengers can a commercial LIYR yacht carry?

The current LIYR operational guidance provides a default limit of 12 passengers for commercial yachts. Carrying more than 12 passengers requires additional approval, including a Passenger Certificate and the appropriate registry endorsement.

Does every commercial yacht require class?

Not every yacht follows the same pathway. Requirements depend on factors such as length, gross tonnage, construction, passenger capacity, operating area and existing certification. Survey, statutory certification or Recognized Organization involvement may apply.

What documents are normally reviewed for yacht registration?

Common documents include the Bill of Sale, existing Certificate of Registry, deletion certificate, ownership declaration, yacht particulars, tonnage information, technical documents, survey records and insurance information.
