Yacht Handover in Malaysia: Connect the Sale, LIYR Plan and Equipment Records
A successful handover gives the buyer a yacht they can understand and a clear set of next steps. Bring the sale documents, registration plan, insurance and equipment records together before setting the completion and delivery date.
Match the vessel and the parties
Check the yacht’s name and identifying numbers against the sale and registry records. Confirm the intended buyer and seller, and the authority of anyone signing for a company. Record any name change separately so older maintenance and survey records can still be connected to the vessel.
Create an agreed handover inventory
- Keys, manuals, access devices and onboard document copies.
- Navigation equipment, machinery and major installed systems included in the sale.
- Tender, safety equipment, spares and loose items included or excluded.
- Available maintenance, survey and equipment service records.
- Photographs or an inventory accepted by the parties.
State the condition or status of important items accurately. Separate a demonstrated function from an independent assessment, and record unresolved questions rather than allowing the buyer and seller to make different assumptions.
Align registration and the next voyage
If LIYR is being considered, review ownership and the available yacht records before finalising the application plan. If the yacht is currently registered elsewhere, coordinate the former-registry requirements with the proposed new arrangement. Insurance should be discussed for the actual handover, skipper, voyage area and delivery period.
Agree who handles departure and arrival coordination, marina access, crew records and the vessel’s operating documents. Discuss any intended commercial use at the outset rather than treating a private purchase as a complete operating approval.
Keep Seakeeper and other equipment records useful
For a yacht with Seakeeper, record the installed model and serial information and pass on available service history. Apply the same discipline to engines, generators and other major systems. The buyer benefits from knowing what is installed, what was last attended to and who can provide the next assessment.
Assign responsibilities before completion
Use the purchase agreement and handover record to identify outstanding documents, payment and delivery milestones, inspection questions and the person responsible for each item. Have the relevant professionals address legal, technical, insurance or customs questions within their scope.
